Tesia Blackburn's Net Return On Teaching

What many people do not realize in regards to teaching-especially teaching an art class, is that a LOT of work and preparation goes into it. In fact, if you were to calculate an hourly wage for all of the prep time plus the teaching time and the follow up, you would be shocked and then wonder why people teach at all.

I, for one, am very appreciative of those that love to teach as I, and others benefit greatly from it. Tesia Blackburn shares her insights as to why she teaches-I might add that not only does she teach classes, but also has a Youtube channel that is an extension of her teaching.

Permission To Be Passionate - Teaching in The Atelier Method
(Written by Tesia Blackburn)

"The virtue of an atelier school is its complete authenticity, its appropriateness to the purpose it serves. There is no compromise. For the study of art, it provides an artist’s domain and involves the focus on work which is an artist’s way of life. " I recently ran across this article on Frank Hobb's blog and found it amazingly readable and worthy.

I'm sure my thoughts will be a pale comparison to what Mercedes said but here goes. READ MORE

Surface Treatments: July 2015 Program

As a fiber artist, Donna is always seeking news ways in which to introduce layers to her fabric before quilting them. This often involves experimentation with various dye techniques, printmaking, texture and mark making-all of which are referred to as 'surface design' in the fiber arts world. Organic plant matter and rust are ways in which a fiber artist can employ that is not only readily accessible, sustainable and economical, but also non-toxic. It is in combining these various technique combinations that allow for a much broader range of surface design.
Donna's lecture and demonstration at the July RRAA meeting will focus primarily on the rusting techniques she uses to create her fiber surface designs. Donna will be sharing her 'start to finish' process along with some samples of her work and a powerpoint presentation.

This program will follow the business portion of the monthly membership meeting.

Membership meetings consist of membership updates and business (about the first half hour to 45 minutes of the meeting) followed by a program. At the meetings, members have a chance to mingle, sign up for art venues, exhibitions, and volunteering. The programs are free of charge and you need not be a member to attend.

With the exception of the December meeting, all meetings are open to the public. RRAA is a non-juried art association and all mediums and levels of ability are welcome to join. Being a resident of Rio Rancho is not a requirement to join-this is a regional art association.

To join RRAA, download and fill out the membership form, the release of liability form and bring it along with your membership dues to the next monthly meeting.

Monthly membership meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

The meetings will be held at Don Chalmer's Ford Community Room (also known as the break room)

A Lecture On Contemporary Art
Confronts Renaissance Masters
Tuesday, September 15th
6:30-7:30 pm
Esther Bone Library
No sign up required

If you visit Italy as a tourist, you probably don't come for the contemporary art, as much for its rich reserve of Renaissance art and history. In Italy, factories and castles are often transformed into modern and contemporary art institutions. The past confronts the present, and the present is enhanced through its relationship to history. In Italian,
un confronto, means a comparison, contrast, or confrontation. In order to heighten the display of modern and contemporary art, historical works are exhibited alongside more recent art. This confrontation is used to draw out relationships present within the history of Italian art, heightening the display of artwork by creating a bridge between artworks of different generations. Sharon Wilson, an artist and frequent traveler to Italy, will talk about the contemporary art scene in Italy.

April 2015 Program

We meet at Don Chalmer's Ford Community Room
(aka: 'Brakeroom'/Community/Education Room)
located on St Rt 528 and Westside
at the southeastern end of Rio Rancho

April Program: Art Critique

One of the most popular program requests we get from our members is to have their art critiqued. Paula Scott will be facilitating this month's critique-Paula has been in an art critique group now for more than 5 years where the artists meet once a month up in Santa Fe. The format used is very structured (and non-threatening) and was developed by Santa Fe artist and author, Nancy Reyner.  Be sure to bring in one piece of art that you might not be happy with, feel unresolved about, or even a work in progress. Getting feedback on your art is a great way to hone your skills in your medium.

Important note: Please be sure to keep your art covered so that we will not see it before it is time to have it up for critique. Paula will go over the critique format with everyone before we commence.

Although you need not be a member to attend the RRAA meetings, only member art will be critiqued-which is still valuable to those who aren't getting their work critiqued.
