The annual Rio Rancho Public Schools art show, "Rising Stars", will take place on the third floor of Rio Rancho City Hall from April 9-28. Regular viewing hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The artwork on display is from high school seniors at various Rio Rancho Public Schools. A free, public reception with refreshments will be held on Friday, April 17from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the third floor of City Hall. During the reception, starting at 5 p.m., awards will be presented to students featured in the art show.

Participation in the art show was open to all students in the class of 2015. The show is judged by guest artists and the awards are sponsored by the Rio Rancho Art Association and the New Mexico Art Education Association.

As part of their membership requirement, National Art Honor Society (NAHS) students will also have their art featured in the Rising Stars show. The induction ceremony for these students will take place on April 17 at approximately 5:30 p.m. following the awards ceremony for the senior art show.

The library will begin sign up for each program approximately one month prior to the event date. Class size is limited to 20 people and unless otherwise indicated, the age range is 8­-80+ years old. You can sign up at the adult information desk at the library or call: 505 891­5012 option 3. Sign up usually begins one month prior to the program date. Please wear clothing that you don't mind getting ink or paint on (or, bring an apron)­.

April Program: Art Critique

One of the most popular program requests we get from our members is to have their art critiqued. Paula Scott will be facilitating this month's critique-Paula has been in an art critique group now for more than 5 years where the artists meet once a month up in Santa Fe. The format used is very structured (and non-threatening) and was developed by Santa Fe artist and author, Nancy Reyner.  Be sure to bring in one piece of art that you might not be happy with, feel unresolved about, or even a work in progress. Getting feedback on your art is a great way to hone your skills in your medium.
  
Important note: Please be sure to keep your art covered so that we will not see it before it is time to have it up for critique. Paula will go over the critique format with everyone before we commence. 

Although you need not be a member to attend the RRAA meetings, only member art will be critiqued-which is still valuable to those who aren't getting their work critiqued.

The Art of the Collage   Saturday July 11th 10 am-12 pm Esther Bone Library Sign Up Required Ages: 13 years - 80+ (not suitable for younger children) Class size minimum: 5 Maximum: 15 Collage (From the French: coller, to glue) is a technique of an art production where a composition is made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. This is mixed media approach and no previous experience is required!  All supplies are provided and this event is FREE! Class will be taught by RRAA artist, Paula Scott

CREATE YOUR OWN SCARF    Just in time for Mother's Day! Saturday, May 10th 10 am-12 pm (a possible repeat of this event on Nov. 21st)    Esther Bone Library  Sign Up Required  Ages: 8 years old on up  All supplies provided  This event is FREE   Come join us with this super fun and easy way to create your own scarf (or, give it as a gift!) led by RRAA artist, Annette Kingman. RRAA will provide you with a blank white scarf to work with along with all other needed supplies and you will leave with your very own creation of a bright and colorful scarf. Perfect to keep for yourself or to give as a gift to mom or some other lucky recipient!

Beginning Origami image from www.origami-resource-center.com Saturday, August 15th 10 am-12 pm Esther Bone Library Sign Up Required: Class size is limited to 15 Ages: 8 years-80+ Have fun learning the basics of Origami-Origami is the Japanese word for paper folding. ORI means to fold and KAMI means paper. Together, they form the word, "origami." It is an art form that has been handed down from parent to child through many generations. RRAA Artist, Sue Hanauer will be teaching this program. All supplies will be provided and this event is FREE!

A Lecture On Contemporary Art Confronts Renaissance Masters   Tuesday, September 15th  6:30-7:30 pm Esther Bone Library No sign up required If you visit Italy as a tourist, you probably don't come for the contemporary art, as much for its rich reserve of Renaissance art and history. In Italy, factories and castles are often transformed into modern and contemporary art institutions. The past confronts the present, and the present is enhanced through its relationship to history. In Italian,  un confronto, means a comparison, contrast, or confrontation. In order to heighten the display of modern and contemporary art, historical works are exhibited alongside more recent art. This confrontation is used to draw out relationships present within the history of Italian art, heightening the display of artwork by creating a bridge between artworks of different generations. Sharon Wilson, an artist and frequent traveler to Italy, will talk about the contemporary art scene in Italy.

Meditation Through Doodling       Saturday, October 17th 10 am-12 pm  Esther Bone Library  Sign Up Required  Ages: 13 years old on up  (not suitable for younger ages) All supplies provided  This event is FREE So, you say you can't draw? We say you can! Learn how to combine quiet contemplation and the simplicity of  the line to both create a work of art and relieve stress.  Learn this simple technique  that you can take with you everywhere.  No previous experience required.   Guaranteed to reduce your stress levels! This program will be taught by Annette Kingman All supplies will be provided and this event is free.

February Program: a Wood Carving Demo

​Marilyn Meuret is​ going to do a demo of a small Christmas Ornaments carved from wood and will be showing her​ carving tools and their uses.  Starting with the small hand tools, up to the larger ones that are used with a mallet, and talk about the safety measurers everyone should observe.  

​Marilyn will​ have photos of her work from the last twenty five years and numerous samples. She ​will also ​bring along her​ Dremel and the bits that she ​carves ​with. Marilyn will also bring along scraps of wood for anyone who would like to try any of the tools.

Gain Some Insight on How to Better Approach Your Artwork

Photographer, Pat Berrett will be the guest speaker at the September Rio Rancho Art Association's (RRAA) monthly membership meeting. This program will be held on Wednesday, September 10th at 6:30 pm (after the business portion of the meeting), is free to the public and you need not be a member to attend. The meetings are held at Don Chalmers Ford Community Room (also known as the break room) 2500 Rio Rancho Blvd., Rio Rancho.

Berrett holds dual degrees in English and Journalism and received his MBA with a concentration in marketing from the University of New Mexico in 1997. He teaches classes for UNM’s Department of Continuing Education and is a frequent speaker at art-related seminars.

Berrett also works for high tech and emerging-technology companies and has carved out a special niche among local dance and theater companies and received a Bravo award in recognition for his work.

Berrett is known as the photographer's photographer and the artist's photographer. His portfolio includes industrial, people, performing arts, and products. One of his specialties is photographing artwork for artists-all mediums, both 2D and 3D. His clients include many well-known New Mexico artisans and craftspeople and he has about 300-400 active clients per year. As a result, Berrett does see recurring problems across the board with all artists. Even with the well known artists. There are common 'mistakes' that are made, no matter what medium it is. Pat will be pointing these areas out for many of the mediums-such as painting, mixed media, 3D and photography, etc. and his talk will focus on what it is that artists need to pay more attention to in their work.
